The Diocese of Arlington’s Technology Standards were revamped for the 2015-2016 school year and they encompass:



  • Technology Systems (Use It)
    • Develop foundations in the understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations.

  • Digital Citizenship (Protect It)
    • Demonstrate an understanding of the history of technology and its impact on society. Practice ethical, legal, and responsible use of technology.

  • Research and Information Management (Find and Organize It)
    • Use digital tools to locate, gather, evaluate, and organize information and data.

  • Learning, Collaboration, and Problem Solving (Solve It)
    • Use a variety of technologies to support and enhance learning, encourage collaboration, increase productivity, and solve problems.

  • Communication and Creativity/Innovation (Create and Communicate It)
    • Use technology for communication, creative thinking, and developing innovative products using various media formats.


Moreover, using SMART Method ,our lessons stress on an important set of critical skills in support of all core academic subject areas:

Safety and Security: How can the Internet be used safely?

Manners and Cybercitizenship: What are students’ social, legal and ethical responsibilities?

Advertising and Privacy: How can students identify commercial messages and safeguard their privacy?
Research: What strategies should students know to effectively use the Internet as a research tool?


Technology: What should students know about the past, present and future of the Internet?
Technology Objectives and Class Policies
Overall Objectives: Technologies are having greater influences on our daily lives – at home, at school, and at work. Whether utilizing applications for word processing, spreadsheets, telecommunications, e-mail or multimedia presentations, students in the 21st century must acquire the technological skills for tomorrow while meeting the needs of today. Therefore, the computer curriculum has been designed for the development of skills over a period of time. These skills will become the building blocks with which the students will meet the challenges of their personal and professional lives. In order to become technologically proficient, the students will develop these skills through integrated activities incorporated throughout the curriculum areas. The curriculum is designed so the students will:
: reinforce keyboarding skills.
: use a variety of technological tools to gather, interpret, evaluate and apply information from various media.
: utilize technology to publish and compile projects/multimedia documents.
: have a working knowledge of the Internet.
: be able to integrate computing and Internet technologies into the core content areas of their grade level curriculum.
: be responsible users of technology, aware of the moral and ethical impact of their actions and be able to discuss consequences of misuse.
Behavior:


  • class rules will be followed at all times
  • everyone will be treated with respect
  • speaking will be conducted with normal voices (no shouting)
Neatness:
  • all assignments are to be neat and legible otherwise they will not be accepted
  • with regard to the classroom, students are expected to keep their work areas clean and respect the property of others
  • any trash on the floor will be picked up and disposed of properly
Grading Policy: Individual grades for computer assignments will be based on adherence to the computer requirements of the assignment(s).FAILURE TO SUBMIT ANY ASSIGNMENT(S) ON TIME WILL RESULT IN THE LOSS OF 10 POINTS FOR EACH DAY THE ASSIGNMENT(S) IS (ARE) LATE.BOTH a PROGRESS and EFFORT grade will appear on the left side of the report card reflecting the student’s Technology grade.
Absentee Policy: If a student is absent and misses computer class, it is the student’s responsibility to get the assigned work and make up any missed work or assignments.
Extra Credit:
  • extra credit opportunities will be afforded as part of an assignment
* Any grade of 77 or below on returned graded papers will be signed by a parent and returned to class the next day.
Classes will meet in the computer lab once a week. Lessons will include keyboarding, data entry, physical and vocabulary knowledge and recognition of both software and hardware. Students will be able to safely and successfully navigate the internet and other types of telecommunications.
Kinder-Grade 2**
  • Growth and development of vocabulary involving technology
  • Development of keyboarding and mouse skills, introduction to word processing
  • Creation of simple graphic designs
  • Recognition of technology for research

3rd – 5th Grade

  • Introduction to computer theory
  • Introduction to telecommunications, understanding of technology vocabulary
  • Identify parts of a computer and navigate various application software
  • Introduction to ethical, moral, and legal issues surrounding technology.
  • Continued development of keyboarding, word processing and graphics skills.

6th – 8th Grade

  • Awareness of the evolution of technology, expansion and mastery of technology based vocabulary
  • Identify basic functions of a computer (input, output, storage, processing, telecommunications)
  • Preparation to apply technology in an ethical, moral, and legal manner. This will include things like copyrights, privacy, security, and virus protection
  • Writing and desktop publishing, continued mastery of keyboarding, word processing, graphic arts
  • Creation of multimedia projects and webpage design
  • Continued mastery of databases, spreadsheets, research methods, and knowledge of technology and its capabilities.

COMPUTER LAB RULES

Come to class with clean hands.


Operate the equipment properly.


Make sure you listen to directions.


Push your chair in & clean up when you are done.


Use your inside voice and headphones when using sound.


Touch the keyboard lightly.


Eating & drinking are not permitted in the computer lab.


Remember to never go on a website without permission.


Log-off – leave the station ready for the next person to use.

Ask for help if you don’t understand something.


Be ready to learn something new when you come to the lab.


Technology Class Reminders:
  1. Be on time to class.
  2. Be respectful and learn from each other.

  4. Be a good listener and contribute to class discussions.
  5. Be a good digital citizen -use technology responsibly online and offline.
Most of the assignments in computer classes are project-based. If a student works diligently and puts forth a concerted effort, they will do well in class. Exceptional work will be rewarded with exceptional grades. Project rubrics will be made available and posted on this website for all major projects. There will be quizzes from time to time to make sure there is an understanding of terminology and basic computer knowledge. Keyboarding is an integral part of computer usage. The better a person can implement keyboarding skills, the easier they will be able to successfully use a computer. Therefore, keyboarding skills are highly emphasized in computer class. Students will be using the Internet as a part of this class. They will be expected to adhere to the Aquinas Acceptable User Policy regarding proper use of the Internet. Students not adhering to the AUP will be subject to school’s discipline policy as stated in the Handbook and may lose the right to computer use. Our computer classes correspond with the ISTE, Virginia SOL for Computer Technology and Diocese of Arlington Technology Curriculum, we strive to make the lessons and assignments as useful and meaningful to our students as possible. While the content of the standards may not change, new technology is always becoming available and we will strive to stay as current as possible so we may present the most up-to-date curriculum to your child as possible.

International Society for Technology in Education
ISTE created six standards for “evaluating the skills and knowledge students need to learn effectively and live productively in an increasingly global and digital world”. Keeping Our Students Safe in the Digital World

1. Stay Safe Online by The National Cyber Security Aliance – NCSA’s mission is to educate and therefore empower a digital society to use the Internet safely and securely at home, work, and school, protecting the technology individuals use, the networks they connect to, and our shared digital assets.
2. SafeKids.com – SafeKids.com is one of the oldest and most enduring sites for Internet safety. It’s creator, Larry Magid, is the author of the original 1994 brochure, “Child Safety on the Information Highway” and is also co-director of ConnectSafely.org and a technology journalist.
3. FBI Parent’s Guide to Internet Safety – This page was prepared from actual investigations involving child victims, as well as investigations where law enforcement officers posed as children.

4. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children Parent Resource Page – This web page provides a wealth of helpful information for parents. 5. Netsmartz.org – NetSmartz Workshop is an interactive, educational program of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children® (NCMEC) that provides age-appropriate resources to help teach children how to be safer on- and offline. The program is designed for children ages 5-17, parents and guardians, educators, and law enforcement. With resources such as videos, games, activity cards, and presentations, NetSmartz entertains while it educates. 6. U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team Guide to Keeping Children Safe Online – U.S. CERT is part of the Department of Homeland Security. This web page provides tips to parents on cyber security.


CYBERSAFETY TIPS You would not let a stranger walk into your house or into your child’s bedroom, but you are letting it happen – through the Internet, keep your children safe!! Be aware of what your child is doing online … keep a close eye on them. It is a dangerous world out there, someone is watching them – it would be best if it were you!!! Check with them regularly, look at their postings regularly, keep an open line of communication with them. Do not over-react, do not under-react, be happy that they are coming to you with something that is going on with them.
SOME TIPS FOR ONLINE SAFETY (safeteens.com and blogsafety.com) BE HONEST ABOUT YOUR AGE: Membership rules are there to protect people. For example: if you are under 13, you should not have a Facebook account. If you are too young to sign up, do not lie about your age. BE AS ANONYMOUS AS POSSIBLE: Avoide posting anything that could enable a stranger to locate you (your last name, name of your school, sports team, your town, area you ‘hang out’ in, etc.).PHOTOS – THINK BEFORE POSTING: What you upload on the Internet can be downloaded by anyone… anyone! They can pass it around and/or own that posting forever – even if you don’t want it on the Internet anymore. Avoid posting pictures that allow people to identify you – do not post pictures of other people (ask them first). Before uploading a photo, think about how you would feel it it were seen by your parent(s), grandparent(s), future employer, etc.CHECK COMMENTS REGULARLY: If you allow them on your profile or blog, check them often. Do not respond to mean or embarrassing comments… delete them! If possible, block offensive people from commenting further.PROTECT YOUR INFORMATION: Check to see if your serve has a ‘friends’ list that allows you to control who can visit your profile or blog. If so, allow only people you know (in the real world) and trust. If you don’t use privacy features, anyone can see your information, including people with bad intentions.AVOID IN-PERSON MEETINGS: Do not get together with someone you “meet” in a profile or blog. It is not risk-free, but if you plan to meet with someone you have met online, it should be in a public place and with your parents – please note, this could be a dangerous situation!! People online are not always who they say they are!!!!
